In recent weeks, our city faced moments of tension and unrest that tested the spirit of our communities and those sworn to protect them. As a chaplain serving alongside the dedicated men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department, I witnessed firsthand the courage, restraint, and compassion shown by officers who put on the uniform each day, not knowing what challenges they might face.

Just before these events unfolded, I had the unique opportunity to fly with the LAPD Air Support Division, gaining a bird 's-eye view of our sprawling city. This perspective reminded me how every neighborhood, every family, and every corner matters deeply.

Soon after, I stood at the command posts downtown, side by side with the men and women of the LAPD and fellow law enforcement officers from across California who responded to support our city in these trying times. In those moments, I witnessed acts of quiet heroism that rarely make headlines: an officer comforting a frightened resident, a reassuring word to a colleague stepping into a tense situation, and the calm presence that can ease a crowd’s uncertainty.

We know that a little bit of light dispels a lot of darkness. It’s more than a saying — it’s a mission. Every choice to speak gently instead of harshly, to listen instead of judge, and to show compassion instead of anger brings light where it’s needed most.

Behind every badge is a human being—a mother, father, son, or daughter—choosing to stand between chaos and calm. And behind each of us lies the same choice: to bring light to our communities, to build trust, and to remind one another that we are stronger together than divided.

To every officer who stood firm, to every community member who chose dialogue over conflict, and to every person who believes in hope rather than fear — thank you. You are the light that guides our city through uncertain times.

If this mission resonates with you, I invite you to join us in spreading compassion and hope through your support, prayers, and partnership.
